ALBUM REVIEW: Check Masses obliterate genre boundaries on 'NIGHTLIFE'
Edinburgh’s dynamic trio Check Masses have defied songwriting convention and obliterated genre boundaries on their debut album ‘NIGHTLIFE’.
‘Dripn Angel’ kicks off with a lofty roar from frontman Angelo Collins which gives way to throbbing drum hits and crisp guitars, while ‘The Moon And You’ is a spate of chopped up rhythms with a synth piquancy.
‘Moroccan Skies’ is driven by psych instrumentation with sporadic guitar strums and subdued chimes, the album’s title track is littered with slick vocal hooks and a propulsive funk vibe, and ‘Lonesome Little Paradise’ showcases Angelo’s most optimal vocal performance against a backdrop of redefined reggae rhythms.
Crafty, daring, and telling, ‘NIGHTLIFE’ is about as good as it gets.
