EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Drew Erwin

Drew Erwin is a 21-year-old Americana/indie-folk singer/songwriter from Memphis who has just released his brand new EP ‘Tennessee and Me‘.

Here we speak exclusively to the rising star about his new EP, future plans, songwriting process and much more:

Have you always known you wanted to pursue music as a career?

I have always been interested in music, but it wasn’t until I got to college and stopped playing sports that I realized that it was what I want to do for the rest of my life.

What is the main inspiration behind your new EP?

I dove really deep into Jason Isbell’s catalog over the past year and a half, and was super inspired by his song writing. Listening to his lyrics really made me want to strip away all the production of my songs and make the focus on lyrical content and delivery.

Can fans expect to see you on the road anytime soon?

As of right now, I plan to hopefully do some touring over the winter break. I’m wrapping up my senior year of college, so most of my playing is local with the exception of some out of town gigs here and there.

When writing new songs do you start with the lyrics or melody?

For me It usually starts with lyrics or a poem. But that’s not always the case. Sometimes a guitar part or chord progression is what kicks off the process.

Which artists are you currently listening too?

Right now I’m still really loving Jason Isbell. Aside from him, I’m really anticipating Noah Gunderson’s new record. Those are just two off of the top of my head. I could go on for days.

If you could collaborate with anyone who would you choose?

Tough question… I’d love to just sit in the room with Dave Cobb while he works on a record.

How would you describe your sound in three words?

Honest. Imperfect. Respectable.

Do you think music has the ability to completely change your mindset?

Of course. Music is one of the most powerful things on the planet. It changes lives and mindsets everyday.

What do you hope to achieve over the next ten years?

In the next ten years I just want to continue to make music and get better at all the things I’ve been dabbling in. A big thing on my list is owning my own studio space. I’m starting to run out of space for my gear.I really just want to continue to do what makes me happy which will always in some way, shape, or form involve writing, recording, and playing.
