It is with great sadness that we share with you that, following her recent diagnosis with cancer, the star of stage and screen Haydn Gwynne died in hospital in the early hours of Friday, 20. She was surrounded by her beloved sons, close family, and friends, her agent said in a statement. Haydn Gwynne was born in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, on May 10, 1957. She studied English and Italian at Nottingham University before working as a teacher in Italy and London. She also attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied classical singing.

In the late 1980s, she began her acting career in TV series such as Nice Work and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. She gained prominence in 1990 when she was cast as Alex Pates, a caustic and clever journalist, in Channel 4’s comedy series Drop the Dead Donkey. In 1994, she was nominated for a BAFTA for her performance.

She later appeared in television shows such as Peak Practice, Merseybeat, Rome, The Windsors, and The Crown. She played a variety of roles, including a doctor, a Roman noblewoman, and a royal consort. She also starred in The Pleasure Principle, Remember Me?, and Hunky Dory.
